Course info
Rural Development is a unique master’s degree course that is designed to
expose students to the rural life of people and the challenges prevailing among rural communities. Rural development has been central to the development effort, but rural poverty persists and funding is falling, thus a new narrative is needed. The course, therefore centers local voices of traditionally marginalized people made invisible through narratives that privilege Western ways of knowing. It offers a ring-side seat to innovative ways of enhancing livelihoods in rural Zimbabwe. There is a need to strengthen the rural economy. The imperative to develop rural areas has to consider topical issues such as climate change adaptation, aid, poverty, disaster response, and land rights. This course will thus impart knowledge to participants on key principles of rural development. The study of rural development is important to development practitioners because rural communities are habitat to the largest percentage of the population in the world. Rural development targets the interests and pragmatic development of communities. The course thus equips students with broad theoretical and practical knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes that enable them to make an important contribution to rural development.
