The course is intended to enable students to explore, learn and discuss the concepts of gender and childhood as well as understand how these are interrelated. It mainly seeks to facilitate students’ exploration of the notion of Gender Mainstreaming (GM), its implications for planned actions including legislation, policies and development programs with a specific focus on children. The inter-linkages between GM and the international human rights discourse will also be explored. A critical analysis of how inequalities and discriminatory realities of gendered childhood in various socioeconomic spaces are formed and perpetuated will also be explored. The ultimate aim of the course is to ensure students’ understanding of how GM can be the platform for gender equality through the formulation, planning, implementation and evaluation of child sensitive social policies.
