This course is designed to familiarize students with key advocacy concepts and techniques. The course suggests a framework for identifying law and policy gaps and goals, creating a plan of action, and effectively building a case for change. This course provides guidance on developing and implementing strategies to influence policy, and provides examples and frameworks which help policy advocates to prioritize advocacy issues, develop key messages, and identify channels, partners and processes for influencing policy-makers. It is intended to help advocates of particular policies to understand risks, and underlines the capabilities and institutional support that agencies need to build in order to maximize advocacy effectiveness.
The course aims to:
• Orient the students to the principles of advocacy for child rights and well-being
• Equip students with skills for identifying weaknesses and gaps in laws and policies requiring change
• Equip students with the skills of advocating for laws and policies around children’s rights
• Have students understand the process of law and policy reform in Zimbabwe and beyond and key actors thereto
• Provide students with techniques for identifying potential partners, opponents and target groups for advocacy.
• Produce advocates for child rights and child sensitive social policies who are able to produce effective messages and implement strategies that result in change.
