The course introduces major concepts, theories and debates in socio-economic development and applies them to social work. It examines poverty, inequality, livelihoods, food security, gender, employment, urbanisation, globalisation, governance, corruption and sustainable development. Students assess how macroeconomic policies and institutional choices affect households, communities and vulnerable groups. Particular attention is given to Zimbabwe’s development trajectory, including structural adjustment, currency reforms, informalisation, social policy and progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals. The course combines theoretical analysis with current evidence, case studies and policy evaluation so that students can connect structural conditions with everyday social problems and professional practice.
