MDLS 121 is aimed at those who are interested in critically analysing key concepts in disaster management theory, research, policy and practice. The module will focus particularly on research methods and techniques used in disaster management. The course will aid students with an understanding of: 1) the emergence and evolution of the social scientific field of disaster research; 2) key definitions, concepts, and data sources in disaster research; and 3) methods and ethics of disaster research. The course adopts standard methods, techniques and best practices that are increasingly employed by international organizations such as the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the World Bank in conducting disaster research.
